Joan Tomas scored the goal of the weekend in the Segunda but the Celta man’s wonder-chilena only salvaged a draw for the celeste in Aragon against Huesca 1-1. Solid effort for Huesca who are playing some decent futbol of late. The draw cut the lead between second and third place for the vigueses to just four points. That’s because Valladolid went on the road to Soria and drilled Numancia 1-4. Things didn’t start out well for the hosts at the [...]

Perhaps one of the best mantra in all of sports was first uttered by the owner of the NFL’s Oakland Raiders, Al Davis, who told his team to ‘just win baby.’ It was a simple message but holds true across the board in all sports especially when you are a futbol team that is trying to avoid relegation. That leads us to Gimnastic de Tarragona who is now in ‘solo vale ganar’ territory. The Catalans are eight points away from [...]

David Porras has joined the ranks of the unemployed in Spain after losing his managerial status at Alcoyano following their desultory defeat at Deportivo over the weekend in the Segunda. The decision from the brass at the club for me personally was a bit of a surprise. Considering this was the manager who got Alcoyano to the Segunda after 42 years, I think getting the axe at this stage of the season, especially after they have been in the saftey [...]

Last year’s Segunda promotion playoff semifinals were ones to remember, especially the Celta-Granada one that will go down  as one of the greatest. However the Elche-Valladolid playoff was no small potatoes and over the weekend these two clubs locked horns in a critical encounter. In the end it was sweet revenge for Valladolid to win the Martinez Valero, the same stadium where they felt they were wronged on two calls that ended up leading to Elche goals last June. Nicki [...]

Sometimes personal stuff can get in the way of futbol writing which is entirely way too inconvenient but luckily things ae back to normal this week for the Segunda Focus with a cracking week of games. Usually the Friday nighter is one that can lull you to sleep but not so this week as Deportivo host Alcorcon. Last week Depor had their long winning streak snapped by a rejuvenated Sabadell and now will try to get back to winning against [...]

After spending last week in the UK, it feels great to be back in the swing of things and delving into the Spanish Segunda once again. Oddly enough, I didn’t come across too many Englishmen who could really talk about the Segunda. All I got were blank stares when trying to start a discussion about whether Celta’s David Rodriguez should be starting or not. Huh. Oh well… Speaking of Celta, we start this week with both Galician sides at the tippy top [...]

I have to admit I was fairly startled by the news bit that came out after the transfer window closed that only one player was actually bought by a Segunda team. That was of course Gilvan getting purchased by Hercules for 120.000 euros. It’s a little puzzling mainly because Hercules isn’t exactly making money at this point in time but nevertheless they got it done. It all underscores the current financial crisis going on in Spain and how these teams [...]

Some upsets over the weekend in the Segunda including Gimnastic upending Elche 1-0 but instead of reviewing this past slot of games, it is the time-honored tradition of detailing the best and worst of the first half of the season in the Spanish Segunda. Best Team: Deportivo. No wait. Elche.. Hold on, it’s Almeria…. Um, but you could make an argument for Hercules. Ah! Don’t forget Valladolid… Or even Celta! You get my point. It’s hard to say who exactly has [...]

This weekend marks Jornada 21 in the Spanish Segunda and even though we actually started with Jornada 2 because of the strike,  we are actually halfway due to Jornada 1 being made up back in early October. Yet for just the first time this season Deportivo sit at the top of the table even though that is where many expected them to be at this stage. There was a time back in the Fall where Deportivo was ninth and Jose [...]

What started out as such a promising week on the Copa front for the Segunda sides ended in disappointment as Alcorcon and Cordoba exited the Copa in midweek games. For Alcorcon, they were played off the field by Levante but for Cordoba it was all heartbreak succumbing to an 89th minute Espanyol goal that sent the Pericos through to the quarters. How will this affect these two sides in league play this weekend? Good question. Both clubs are very much [...]
