The ripple effect took effect just shy of 10pm Spanish time on Sunday as Villarreal were officially relegated to the Segunda. It was one of those shocking realizations that happened in rapid-fire succession which prompted a collective ‘Oh my God, Villarreal is relegated” around the Twitterverse. I know I speak for many in saying that I did not want Villarreal to go down. A club that has traditionally played in Europe the last eight seasons or so almost doesn’t belong [...]

This weekend we get treated to two top five tilts in the Segunda Division as the home stretch is basically here with six matches remaining. Celta wrapped up their suspended match versus Cartagena with the score unchanged 1-1 which leaves them behind Valladolid by two points for second. This week Celta are back at home but face an Alcorcon team that is unbeaten in their last seven including six wins. Alcorcon’s road woes are a thing of the past as [...]

For a good while there it looked as if Villarreal would have no issues staying up in the Primera but in the last few weeks or so things have taken a wrong turn for the Submarino and now they face a do or die match this weekend for their ‘permanencia’. A Villarreal relegation would send a huge ripple through the ranks of the Segunda as it would mean the automatic relegation of Villarreal B to the Segunda B. That means [...]

OK OK…. So I know that all of the buzz is still about the aftermath of the Clasico, the Champions League semis and the Europa League semis and of course Pep Guardiola leaving his post as Barca manager. But please allow me to start luring you Segunda way because, well, outside of the Copa final, the race for fourth and the usual relegation drama, all the fun is being had down here. It’s another derbi this week as Elche and [...]

Just wanted to do a quick look back on the weekend in the Segunda and with that you have to start with Valladolid who won yet again. The Pucelete grabbed a 0-1 win at Villarreal B on Friday night with a goal from Javi Guerra. Last year’s Segunda Focus Player of the Year has certainly rounded into form this second half of the season. Valladolid now five points up on Celta. That’s because the Vigo bunch went to Alicante and [...]

One of these days, perhaps as ealy as next year, we’ll be able to have a ‘mini-clasico’ the day of the Clasico where Real Madrid Castilla plays Barcelona B in the Segunda but for now we will make do with what we have which ain’t too bad. Let’s start off with Alcorcon-Cordoba on Saturday. Juan Antonio Anquela’s group has been stellar but now they head into a stretch where they will be facing five different teams all in promotion contention. [...]

So two derbi gallegos are in the books this season and both wins for the 2011-2012 season will be residing at Riazor. In what was a pulsating affair, Depor takes the derbi gallego in the final seconds with a Borja header 2-3. Riki sent the guests ahead in just the third minute which was an oddly similar situation to their early goal in the first game at Riazor. Celta pushed hard for the equalizer and played some Primera-level futbol but [...]

So it is once again derbi gallego time as Depor and Celta renew acquaintances on Sunday, this time in Vigo at Balaidos. The first match was a great one and I think everyone expects the second to be the same. But, before we touch on that, let’s get to the other games. Esteban Vigo’s first game as Almeria manager didn’t go as planned as they were upended last week in Huesca 1-0. Now ‘Senor Ascenso’ makes his debut in front [...]

We’ve seen plenty of great goals this season in the Segunda but this past weekend might have topped ‘em all as far as the best goal-scoring weekend is concerned. Let’s start with Chilean international Fabian Orellana who curled in a delightful goal in Celta’s big 2-0 win over Villarreal B. Orellana’s goal found the top right corner from about 30 yards out in what helped the Celeste extend their lead back out to four points over Valladolid. The Pucelete had [...]

In just a few weeks the Galician derby will return which will be awesome for all of us but in the meantime let me entice you with the Desperation Derby that will be taking place this weekend in Murcia. Real Murcia hosts Cartagena in a Murcian derbi which will be a must-win for both sides. Murcia have lost eight of their last nine and are dropping precariously close to the drop zone while Cartagena are five points away from safety. [...]
