Segunda Focus: Pucelete Power

Just wanted to do a quick look back on the weekend in the Segunda and with that you have to start with Valladolid who won yet again. The Pucelete grabbed a 0-1 win at Villarreal B on Friday night with a goal from Javi Guerra. Last year’s Segunda Focus Player of the Year has certainly rounded into form this second half of the season. Valladolid now five points up on Celta.

That’s because the Vigo bunch went to Alicante and lost 1-0 to Hercules. They still have that make-up game versus Cartagena to complete (1-1, 59th) but it’s not a good sign for Celta fans seeing their team slip back into the playoffs, much like how they did last season.

Deportivo emerged as winners against Elche 4-3 in a wild one that saw every Depor goal get answered by the Ilicitanos until Colotto netted the gamewinner in the 86th. By the way, what a season for Bruno Gama who has been superb. The Portuguese man had two more goals against Elche.

Alcorcon dusted off another opponent, this time Cordoba 2-0. Ever since Cordoba announced they would renew Paco Jemez, Cordoba has gone in the toilet. Paco, you get all that on paper? Goals to Montanes and Nagore did it. Alcorcon are a strong fifth.

Almeria had another chance for victry slip through their fingers drawing 1-1 with Cartagena. Esteban Vigo’s team took the lead only to see Carta equalize with a late penalty. For the record, ever since Lucas Alcaraz was fired, Almeria haven’t won. Just sayin’.

Girona picked up a rare road win beating fellow Catalans Sabadell 2-3. Still a long ways to go before they can consider safety.

As for safety, Guadalajara did themselves a big favor beating Gimnastic 1-0 in front of the home fans. Carlos Terrazas’ team is still six points up on Alcoyano.

The just-mentioned Alcoyano kept their ‘permanencia’ hopes alive whitewashing Recreativo 1-3 in a game where the team desperate for points outplayed the team desperate for a summer tee time.

Xerez smacked Las Palmas 2-0 effectively ending the Pio Pio’s chances at a playoff while Huesca won at home 2-1 over Numancia.

Lastly, Murcia lost again, this time to Barca B 1-0 at the MiniEstadi as just a few hundred depressed Catalans watched this one late Sunday night. Young pup Dongou scored the game’s only goal. That now leaves Murcia, Huesca and Alcoyano all at 39 points, six points ahead of Alcoyano in the drop.

Back at the top, it’s Elche four points back of Cordoba and Almeria who are at 54 points and fighting for sixth. Cordoba technically in sixth.
