Once in a while a team comes along that simply dominates in its field. Think France during the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Think Real Madrid from the mid-50’s to mid-60’s. Barcelona now. On the international stage, there is no doubt that the current team to be seen in such a light is Spain and this is reflected in the Spain euro 2012 odds. Having ended their tournament hoodoo at the Euro 2008 tournament, they went into the last World [...]

Goyo Manzano, if we look back on his achievements and stop with his last few weeks in charge of Real Mallorca in 2010, was a successful and well-respected coach looking to parley that magical season where the Andalusian coach had the minnows in a Champions League place for much of the season into a significant pay-day. He had earned it. Mallorca on the other hand couldn´t afford his salary let alone give him a raise. He would wait, the offers [...]

I was all set to lead in with Elche’s thrashing of Alcorcon but instead ol’ Henok Goitom went and scored the golazo of the year in the Segunda with his angled chilena against Sabadell not even best sports books had that pegged. The Swede was already having a really good game up until that point but took it to another level with the strike. It’s one thing to hit a chilena straight on in the box, quite another to have [...]

With this weekend being the final weekend of 2011 for futbol in the Segunda, you have to think that teams will want to go into the three week break with a win and some momentum as they build toward the second half of the season. This is actually only Jornada 18 so we have technically not reached the midway point, but you get my drift. It feels alot better eating those 12 grapes at midnight on December 31st with a win [...]

I´d say one of the most important storylines that all the major papers are talking about in Spain this week is the idea that CR7, one of the great footballers of this and any age is taking the brunt of the criticism for having lost all but one encounter with FC Barcelona since his time at Real Madrid. Even Marca and As.com were ganging up on the Lusitanian. He’s Real Madrid´s #7, one of the great numbers that have ever [...]

On Saturday night Barcelona once again stood at the top of world football. Once again they went toe to toe with their greatest advisory and once again they come out victorious, standing tall above the rest of world football. This was more than just another El Classico. This seemed different, a genuine turning point in modern Spanish football. Real Madrid went into this match on top of the league and for the first time too, on top psychologically. Cracks has [...]

La Liga Weekly would like to point the spotlight at our own Arch Bell, master of the Segunda division here on the site, who was featured prominently at Marca.com in their build-up to this weekend´s clásico. They interviewed journalists from around the world and asked them how the game will be welcomed in their little part of the world. I really think that journalists in Spain are still somewhat bemused by the attention that La Liga gets all over the [...]

So by now all of the talk surrounding the Clasico has driven you completely nuts and you just want to shout out, ‘Just get on with it already!!!” I couldn’t agree more. But, before you sit down in front of your couch or at your favorite watering hole to watch the two hours of Pepe planting his cleats on everyone and Busquets clutching his face at the slightest brush of contact, I suggest some Segunda watching to get you ready. [...]

For better or for worse Spanish football these days seem to be defined by only two matches. This weekend we see the first of these matches, the first El Classico. For the past three seasons Barcelona have got the better of Real Madrid both in terms of the El Classico and over the course of a season. This season feels different however. Maybe this will finally be the season that Real Madrid strike back and take first blood in their [...]

The results from the weekend in the Segunda made for some rather desultory futbol watching as viewers were either treated to a lopsided result or a sleep-inducing goaless draw. Let’s start with Valladolid-Deportivo which was billed as a ‘Primera’ type of game only to see it devolve into a game of kick and giggle 0-0. Actually, to be fair, Valladolid did at least try and a Javi Guerra annulled goal should have counted but overall, these two teams didn’t exactly get the blood [...]

Lots of good stuff to cover this week in the Segunda and I’m not just talking about the winners of the Premios LFP for the 2010-2011 season (which can be found here: http://www.altaspulsaciones.com/lfp-da-conocer-premios-lfp-temporada-201011.html) If there was one player in the Liga Adelante who had the right to scour the season schedule when it was released to find a particular fixture, it was Elche’s Miguel Linares. You see, this weekend Elche play Barcelona B, the same opponent when Linares ripped up [...]
