When I was a kid growing up in West Texas every Sunday evening our family had a tradition where we would go out to a Mexican food restaurant for dinner. Granted, this was more TexMex rather than authentic Mexican food but hey, when you’re eight years old having two bean burritos smothered in chile con queso sure beats the heck out of Mom’s three day old meatloaf. Without fail, my mom every single time would order the ‘Guadalajara Especial’ with [...]

In every great civilisation there comes a tipping point, a point where the Empire has grown too bloated and too large and it must crumble down and burn to the ground. It happened in Greece, in Rome and it is happening to football today. Just as the Romans put on bigger show after bigger show in the Coliseum as it’s time as a super power came to an end, now it’s football’s turn to reach that disgusting end. Wages can’t [...]

When Andrés Palop’s level under the sticks began to deteriorate the change was going to be a tough one. Knowing that you had to be looking at making the change, the uncertainty of Javi Varas was evident. This is what made Gregorio Manzano’s move to bring Varas to the fray was that much more courageous. It was finally a chance for the hometown kid to get the opportunity of a lifetime and do good on it. Varas was always a [...]

If you’ve ever lived in Spain you quickly learn that one of the great things about Spanish culture is the frequency of ‘puentes’ on the calendar. That is to say that many holidays will fall on a Thursday or Tuesday making for an extra long holiday weekend. Well lately the LFP has decided that there will be a Segunda game every Monday night to go along with the Friday night game so voila! Segunda fanaticos like ourselves get a four [...]

For some players, transfers happen out of the blue. In Mikel Arteta’s case that was literally true. He left behind the blue boys of Liverpool and moved down the road to the red of north London in a transfer that moved very quickly and to the surprise of many. Everton of course were not happy.  They didn’t want to sell but they were left with no choice once the player asked to leave. Other transfers take a far longer time [...]

I made the comment in Friday’s preview about how Celta’s Paco Herrera would be completing his 50th game as head coach of the Vigo side and how much of a accomplishment that is.  In a league that averages roughly 15 coaching changes per season, getting to 50 games with one team isn’t shabby. Heck, look at Paco Lopez who didn’t get to five games with Cartagena. Lopez’s team was atrocious over the weekend at home against Alcorcon losing 0-2. In [...]

Wenger’s Demise Echoes Cruyff’s Final Years At Barcelona. For even the greatest clubs with the greatest managers, sometimes things just naturally come to an end. This is true in other aspects of life too. Even after Winston Churchill helped fight off the Nazi’s and raise the nations spirits with his brilliant war time addresses, he still lost the next election. The public wanted a new approach, one that looked forward to the future rather than one that was built on [...]

Interesting matches abound this week even if there are no intense matches on paper amongst equally matched teams. The most competitive match may well be Athletic hosting Real Betis. Athletic are coming off a decent showing midweek and their confidence is much higher than where they were last week to have lost to Espanyol at Cornellà despite playing much above their Barcelona rivals. This week they host Real Betis who are flying high, unpredictably third on the table with two [...]

One of the things that stands out about this weekend’s slate of games in the Segunda is the renewal of acquaintances between some old familiar faces. Look no further than tonight’s Friday Night Lights which figures to be a darn good one. A suddenly-in-crisis- Hercules welcomes Barcelona B to the Rico Perez in Alicante in what figures to high scoring affair. With Barca B you always have plenty of goals for better or worse. The news in the Hercules camp [...]

When last we commented about the Del Nido´s Revolution, there was more than a bit of optimism in the air. Sure, there were 18 clubs that had been invited to the meeting in Seville, 12 showed up and only a few were as vocal as Sevilla over rectifying the remarkable imbalance that La Liga bares over any other major football league in Europe, but there was at least a dialogue in order and debates were planned to continue those lines [...]

Most Segunda experts pegged Sabadell as the strongest of the newly promoted teams but there is no way anyone could have foreseen the Catalns winning their first three games en route to a perfect start to their Segunda season. Yet that is what they have done and along with Elche, Sabadell occupy one of the precious automatic promotion spots in La Liga Adelante. Granted we are only three weeks in but you can help but be impressed. However the true [...]
