Originally my plan was to do just one preview that encompassed both legs of the Segunda semifinals but after the first two matches I’m finding that’s just impossible. The second legs get started with Celta heading south to Andalucia to face Granada at Estadio Los Carmenes on Saturday holding a 1-0 advantage on the aggregate. The rallying point coming from the Granada camp is the face of goalkeeper Roberto and more specifically, his swollen left eye that absorbed the boot [...]

Javi Guerra (who else?) scored in the 60th minute to give Valladolid the win the first leg of the Spanish second division promotion playoff semifinal at Estadio Nuevo Zorilla in Valladolid. Like all season long, Guerra made the difference for the Pucelanos who picked up a deserved victory and now travel to Elche for the return leg on Sunday. Valladolid were superior over the course of the entire 90 minutes and had two clear scoring chances in the first 45. [...]

The first Segunda playoff game is in the books with Celta riding away with a victory over Granada at Estadio Balaidos in Vigo. The man who will be at the center of many a toast of albarinos tonight is Michu. The hulking Asturian slammed in the game’s only goal in the 78th minute after a solid cross from Hugo Mallo. The ball looked to have been intended for Iago Aspas but the well-marked Aspas did not reach the ball and [...]

I’ll admit it. I’m as excited as a school girl on the eve of the Segunda playoffs. We have finally arrived to the point in the season that has been a big focus of the Segunda Focus. And the best part is that we are awarded with two very good pairings which should make for some good matches. Here is my breakdown and picks for who advances to the playoff final. Celta-Granada These two begin the playoffs on Wednesday in [...]

So the 2010-2011 Segunda regular season has come to a close, much of it with a whimper. The only two matches of major interest were foregone conclusions by halftime with Valladolid cruising to a 2-0 win over Alcorcon with two first half Javi Guerra goals. And Elche scoring twice in the first ten minutes to put away Xerez 4-1. The result means Valladolid grab the final playoff spot and will face Elche in their semifinal while Celta and Granada square [...]

It’s hard to believe that we are on the cusp of the final weekend in the Liga Adelante. It just seems like yesterday that I was picking Tenerife to win the entire league. So, if you have remained a reader throughout this whole season, I say kudos to you because obviously there are times when I have no idea what I am talking about. There remains some intrigue in a couple matches but the two where all eyes will be [...]

Apologies for the long delay in getting the weekend recap up. The Memorial Day holiday on Monday here in the US always throws me off and has me believing that Tuesday is actually Monday. In any event, some quick thoughts on some of the matches over the weekend. The Valladolid playoff party has been put on hold after their 1-0 loss at Huesca. That results, coupled with Xerez’s controversial 2-1 win over Celta means that the Azulino still have a [...]
