It is that time of year when we get to hand out the virtual hardware for the best and worst of the Spanish Segunda Division during the 2010-2011 season. Have a look and by all means add your thoughts on feelings on my selections. I encourage discussion! And now, the awards…. Most Valuable Player – Javi Guerra (Valladolid) If there was an award for the actual best player in the Segunda that would probably be for Betis’ Achille Emana but [...]

With Neymar already confirming to many that playing for Real Madrid is his dream, the club wanted to make sure that they snatched up every young, talented player they could this summer. It appears as if Zinedine Zidane is doing just that with hot rumours coming out of the Bernabeau that 18yr old Raphael Varane is ready to sign with “los Blancos” this week. Varane, the 6’3 French International, who Zidane compares to Laurent Blanc (current French National Team Manager) [...]

Apologies for posting a rather tardy match report of Saturday’s final but alas Father’s Day weekend here in the US eats up alot of time especially when you have a three year old daughter who, for whatever reason, would rather read Elmo books than watch second half stoppage time of the Segunda second leg final. So 35 years later, Granada are back in the Primera after snatching a 1-1 draw at the Estadio Martinez Valero on Saturday night. Like the [...]

Young Turkish superstar Nuri Sahin wants to break into the Madrid starting lineup but he’ll have to quickly win the hearts of the fans given all of the talented players on the team.  Since signing with Real, Sahin has been adamant about saying he foresees himself starting immediately for Mourinho’s XI. The race continues to sign Portuguese national and Benfica star, Fabio Coentrao, however, Benfica says it wants at least 25-30 million euros plus Royston Drenthe or Ezekial Garay.  The [...]

The heartstopping drama of the Spanish Segunda Division playoffs added a new chapter to its enthralling young history as visiting Elche waltzed out of Estadio Los Carmenes in Granada with a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their promotion final. Elche goalkeeper Jaime was the hero stopping two penalty kicks in second half stoppage time to give the Ilicitanos the slight advantage heading home for Saturday’s return leg. Jaime’s first stop of Abel Gomez’s kick was ordered to be [...]

It all comes down to this. Just two teams remain standing in the fight for the third and final golden ticket to the Primera. Granada and Elche kick off their final with a first leg encounter on Wednesday night at Los Carmenes in Granada, the site of Saturday’s epic second leg semifinal between the Andalucians and Celta. The return leg will be Saturday in Elche which favors the Ilicitanos. Elche earned the benefit of the home return leg on the basis [...]

I would be remiss if I did not update you all on the goings on in Spain’s lower levels as the Segunda B and Tercera divisions continue with their post-season play. In the Segunda B, it all comes down to four teams fighting over the last four spots. Real Murcia and Sabadell have already clinched their tickets to the 2011-2012 Segunda after winning the ‘Group Winners’ phase of the playoffs. Murcia went on to win the outright Segunda B title [...]

Three goals in a span of 13 minutes did the trick for Elche who pulled off a massive comeback defeating Valladolid by a 3-2 aggregate in the Spanish Segunda playoff semifinal on Sunday night at Estadio Martinez Valero in Elche. Edu Albacar scored twice and Angel added the third goal for the hosts who will meet Granada in the playoff final that begins Wednesday evening at Estadio Los Carmenes in Granada. The two teams will then play the return leg [...]

The date of June 11, 2011 will forever live not just in Granada lore but perhaps in all of Spanish futbol lore for producing one of the best matches anyone will ever see as Granada defeated Celta in penalty kicks to advance to the final of the Spanish Segunda playoffs. After the full 90 minutes, the aggregate was a 1-1 draw following Fabian Orellana’s goal in the 21st minute that gave Granada a 1-0 lead in Saturday’s return leg. As [...]

Originally my plan was to do just one preview that encompassed both legs of the Segunda semifinals but after the first two matches I’m finding that’s just impossible. The second legs get started with Celta heading south to Andalucia to face Granada at Estadio Los Carmenes on Saturday holding a 1-0 advantage on the aggregate. The rallying point coming from the Granada camp is the face of goalkeeper Roberto and more specifically, his swollen left eye that absorbed the boot [...]

Javi Guerra (who else?) scored in the 60th minute to give Valladolid the win the first leg of the Spanish second division promotion playoff semifinal at Estadio Nuevo Zorilla in Valladolid. Like all season long, Guerra made the difference for the Pucelanos who picked up a deserved victory and now travel to Elche for the return leg on Sunday. Valladolid were superior over the course of the entire 90 minutes and had two clear scoring chances in the first 45. [...]
