What a weekend for futbol in the Segunda! It was a bit odd having the games spread out over the weekend with the Primera on international break but it made for easier futbol watching which is all that matters. Fans were treated to a plethora of games and it all culminated on Sunday night in primetime with the dramatic Rayo-Betis game that lived up to expectations. If the LFP was looking to showcase the best of the Segunda for all [...]

Marcelo Vieira da Silva Júnior, or “Marcelo” is a 22 year old Brazilian National who has had a fantastic year for Real this year.  He likes to push up the left side as either a back or winger and has been vital to Madrid’s success.  I’ll be honest in saying that I had some doubts about the young player’s role at the beginning of the year.  Moreover, I’d become even more nervous after discovering that Jose Mourinho would be leading [...]

Guest writer – Mando Garcia It’s easy to think that the surface coverage of La Liga coming from the English sites is minuscule at best, slanted with suppositions at worst, and giving an anglo-centric viewpoint that has little to do with the reality of the Spanish game. You wouldn’t expect me to pull off an effective critique of the English game, let’s say I wrote an article called “Beating Man United” and then went about criticizing the Red Devils for [...]

Let’s just cut right to the chase. There’s really only one Segunda game this weekend that will divert most people’s attention away from the international friendlies and Euro qualifiers and that’s the Sunday night prime-timer between Rayo and Betis. Slotted into the 9pm spot on Canal +, there has been as much hype for this game than any Segunda game in recent memory. Rayo will be desperate to avenge their 4-0 loss in Sevilla in the first half of the [...]

The big news that came down this week in the Segunda was the announcement that Luis Enrique would leave his post as Barcelona B coach at the end of the season. In light of Pep Guardiola’s contract renewal with the senior team, this news about Luis Enrique really does not come as a major surprise. His work with the Baby Blaugrana has been nothing short of spectacular, helping the team earn promotion last season from the Segunda B and now [...]

This past weekend in the Segunda was one where two very long winless streaks were finally snapped with Las Palmas breaking their 14 match streak and Ponferradina winning for the first time in 17 weeks. Unsurprisingly, both teams can be found in the relegation zone which is starting to become a race just as compelling as the one at the top. Despite the win, Ponfe are six points shy of safety but Las Palmas are now just a single point [...]

Madrid had a practice session (it was an actual match) against Hercules in the Bernabeau on Saturday evening. Mourinho changed up his lineup and started Arbeloa, Albiol, Diarra, and Granero instead of featuring his usual lineup of Pepe, Khedira, Carvalho and Xabi Alonso. Real Madrid was still down six points in the league table going into the match while one of their main stars, Kaka was still sidelined with an injury and rumored to be on the transfer block for [...]

It seems a bit silly to spend time divulging my thoughts on who will be winning this week’s games in the Segunda when the nation of Japan is literally being ravaged by mother nature. Add to that last week’s news that Betis man Miki Roque has contracted cancer and will no longer be able to play futbol and it’s easy to see become a bit apathetic about futbol. But, with futbol like all sport, a slight divergence of one’s attention [...]

Racing Santander’s new owner Ahsan Ali Syed said his club can compete with Barcelona and Madrid in a a La Liga title race. If he doesn’t want to eat his words, Racing better prove it tomorrow against a beat up Real Madrid team who needs to continue to chip away at a large Barca lead in the league table. Cristiano Ronaldo walked off the pitch midweek in considerable pain after scoring a hat trick against Malaga and will be out [...]

About the last thing I expected in the Segunda’s midweek was for Huesca to waltz into Vigo and come away with a victory but that’s exactly what happened. That now gives Huesca wins over Rayo and Celta, the Segunda’s top two teams currently, in a span of five days… Holy Jesus! But credit to Onesimo Sanchez for executing a perfect game plan against Paco Herrera’s side in the 1-2 win. They managed to limit De Lucas as well as possible [...]

Rare is the week where we get midweek action in the Segunda but this week just so happens to be one. For teams who had some pretty bitter losses over the weekend, a quick turnaround is always the best remedy because it offers the fastest path to redemption. Also, consider the fact that maybe some fringe players will be seeing time who ordinarily don’t because of the compact schedule and possible injuries. This all makes for the brewing of several [...]
