Stoke City today announced the permanent transfer of Jermaine Pennant from Real Zaragoza for an initial £1.725 million. The fee may rise to £2.8 m in the future and represents a large come down from the initial sum Zaragoza demanded when negotiations began. Stoke’s Chief Executive Tony Scholes told the club’s website the deal took time but was worth it in the end he said. “We have been working very hard over the past couple of weeks to do the [...]

Tony Pulis has began negotiations with Zaragoza regarding the permanent transfer of Jermaine Pennant. The deal has already hit a snag with Stoke being unwilling to pay the fee asked, a reported £6 million. The fact his Spanish employers seem so content to cut their losses on the one time Liverpool winger speaks volumes. Pennants transfer to the North East of Spain certainly raised eyebrows in England at the time. The bigger question is why don’t English players settle in [...]

10.  Real Madrid wins the Copa Del Rey-Runners up in ‘04 and ‘02 after winning it in 1993, this is Coach Mou’s goal.  Next up is Levante and I think Madridistas everywhere are hoping we can surprise some people and bring the King’s trophy to the King’s city. 9.  Kaka returns to his form when he was playing for AC Milan and won the FIFA World Player of the Year-He’ll be back in January and everyone in the world (including [...]

It was pretty apparent over the weekend in the Segunda just exactly who had already started their vacation and who still knew that work had to be done. In some cases, you saw two teams squaring off where it was clear that both had already “hacer las maletas“. I’d lump Huesca into that group but they always draw 0-0 at home anyways so it’s hard to point a finger at them. By the way, the Aragonians did well to shut [...]

Villarreal vs. Real Mallorca, a grudge match stemming back from the debatable decision to expel Mallorca from the Europa League in favor of Villarreal, despite Mallorca finishing in 5th place, above Villarreal in the league at the close of the 09-10 season. Financial difficulties at the island club meant UEFA barred them from international club competition, and in Villarreal stepped to take their place. It was said in the press that these two squads would thus be at each others’s [...]

That is the question the coaches in the Segunda are asking themselves heading into this weekend’s slate of games. The holidays are upon us and with that, a well-deserved two week break for players in Spain upon the completion of Jornada 17 in the Liga Adelante. The trick will be keeping the minds of the players off of their beach getaways, family get togethers and ski vacations and on the task at hand. There is alot of merit earning a [...]

Over the course of a season there are so many coaching changes within the Segunda. It’s not like the Primera where coaches can sometimes stay at a club for several years. Coaches in the Segunda move around much more often. Is that a good or bad thing? It depends on how you look at it I guess. Part of me thinks that some of these guys should get a longer time to put their unit together while at the same [...]

Saturday’s three La Liga fixtures are highlighted by what should be an entertaining clash at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez between ninth-placed Getafe and a Villarreal team desperately trying to hang on to the coat tails of the top two, Barcelona and Real Madrid. Geta boss Michel this week cited the ‘Yellow Submarine’ as the example his club should follow, and his team are in goalscoring mood with six in the last two games. Sevilla, having slipped to tenth with three [...]

Sevilla fans looking at the league table before this weekend’s home clash with Almería will find their team in an unfamiliar position with just over a third of the season already played. Last week’s defeat to Villarreal was the fourth in a row – including a 4-2 Europa League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain – and saw Gregorio Manzano’s outfit plunge to 10th spot with just 20 points and the joint-fourth worse defensive record in the division. It has been the [...]
