FC Barcelona sensation Lionel Messi is recovering faster than expected. The Argentine playmaker was able to train with his Catalan club last Friday for the first time since injury. Today’s headlines from the club’s official website reads, Vilanova: “It is important for Leo to recover properly” you think? Messi was in the party of 19 that travelled to Rubin Kazan on Monday, even though he has not been given medical clearance. Josep Guardiola’s assistant Vilanova spoke about the situation from [...]

Personally, I have always had a soft spot in my heart for the more diminutive players in futbol. It’s not that I’m short myself, I’m actually on the tall side, but I appreciate a sport where players who are just several inches above five feet can still stand tall among their opponents. Diego Armando Maradona is probably the most renowned short guy ever to play the game giving hope to lilliputian-sized Argentine boys everywhere including Salamanca’s Brian Sarmiento. Still only [...]

One Good Team, One Bad Team After five games, the picture at the top of the table is still a little muddied. Real played out a pathetic draw away to Levante, Barcelona got an impressive win at San Mames and Valencia was able to come out 2-0 against Sporting. Sevilla continues to struggle, Atletico continues to win, surprisingly or not depending on what side of the Atletico fence you sit, and Deportivo and Zaragoza continue to be bad. Diabolically bad, [...]

Barcelona win today against a 10-men Bilbao with the dismissal of Fernando Amorebieta on 33 minutes. They also lose striker David Villa for their next match against Mallorca after receiving a red card in the final stages as Bilbao would pull one back to go 1-2 before Barca’s Busquets would respond back with a third score for the visitors.   Villa assisted on the opening goal by Keita in the 54th minute with a first time pass.

It is always amusing to see the coaches of teams whom have gotten off to such great starts try to temper the enthusiasm showed by the club’s fan bases. In many respects the ‘entrenadores’ are right. The Segunda season is still very young and history tells us that many teams have raced out of the gates only to flame out by Christmas. This year some of the coaches who have been preaching this gospel are Pepe Mel at Betis, Oscar [...]

To the Anglophone, the name of Real Sporting de Gijon sounds remarkably like the abrasive call of the equinus africanus asinus, more commonly known as the Donkey. While this comparison may be a cheap joke at the expense of cultural and linguistic differences, it is also an ironic description of the style of football Gijon displayed at Barcelona’s Camp Nou on Wednesday night; hard-headed, stubborn, and unwilling to budge, Gijon put on a defensive masterclass in an effort to keep [...]

His name certainly wasn’t at the top of anyone’s list of players who might win the Segunda Division ‘pichichi’ as the league’s top scorer but lo and behold Alcorcon’s Quini leads the way with five on the season. Having never played higher than the Segunda B, Quini’s rise to prominence on the young season is a reminder that sometimes strikers get better with age. Seasons spent patrolling up top at places like Leganes and Zamora have paid off as the [...]

On Sunday night we were treated not only to a wonderful game of football between two very good sides full of attacking flair, but also to a show of strength from the reining Spanish champions. Barcelona went into this match at Atletico Madrid behind in the table not only to their hosts and but also to their great rivals Real Madrid after last weekend’s shock home defeat to Hercules. This defeat had brought more than just embarrassment and shock to [...]

If you are a regular listener to the La Liga Weekly podcast series (you can find it here if you are not), you will know that I mentioned the Andalusian derbi as my pick for the most interesting game of the weekend. Now I know there is a little affair to be played on the banks of the Manzanes this weekend between Atletico and Barcelona, one that is looking like a must win for Barcelona after Real Madrid narrowly won [...]
