The title of this week’s column unfortunately has more enthusiasm packed in it than what was seen at many stadiums around the Segunda for the opening weekend of games. Don’t get me wrong, the fans at the Manuel Ruiz de Lopera came out to watch Betis dispose of Granada, but overall the crowds were fairly thin for week one in the Liga Adelante. It shouldn’t come as a surprise as many Spaniards were wrapping up their vacations and plus it [...]

Can Atletico Keep It Up All Season Long? Having taken in a full four games of La Liga this weekend, I was not at a loss for words for my first column of the new season on La Liga Weekly. The requisite Real Madrid and Barcelona games were watched, and while many conclusions can be drawn from both, such as not much has changed in terms of playing style for Real, and that Barcelona never really needed Ibrahimovic, these were [...]

Liverpool’s Argentine international midfielder, Javier Mascherano, was officially presented as an FC Barcelona player Monday. The transfer netted ~€21 million dollars in the move from English Premier League club Liverpool, as stated by Goal.com writer Subhankar Mondal. Mascherano joins Barcelona on a four-year deal with a buy-out clause of €90m. Mascherano will wear number 14 at his new club with the departure of Thierry Henry to MLS Red Bulls, the number’s previous owner. The South American joins David Villa and [...]

Image via WikipediaRather than write this before the first match of the new season, I decided to save my words and wait on watching the first game at the Ono Estadi in Mallorca where the mayorquinos have been so tough. As expected, the game was a cagey affair, with both clubs having opportunities, but neither really taking over the game fully, which is surprising because Real Madrid were all about taking over games, over-running games in fact when at their [...]

It only seems like yesterday that we were toasting the exploits of Real Sociedad, Levante and Hercules whom were promoted to the Spanish Primera and now get a crack at La Liga’s best. But with another summer comes another chance at renewal for teams in the Segunda and this year story lines abound that should make for a compelling season, and I’m not just talking about the soap opera at Betis… Ok, so I’m mainly talking about the soap opera [...]

After last week’s unusual press conference where Pep Guardiola cryptically responded to reporters if he still counted on the former Swedish international by saying, “He’s still here isn’t he?” At first I thought that there might be some brewing problem between Guardiola and management, but I’m not so sure anymore. In a post-match news conferences with Italian media today (the Swede will not talk to the Catalan media which is obvious that is one of the major problems), Zlatan blew [...]

Valencia: Valencia: Besides losing Roberto Soldado with a groin injury, Manuel Llorente’s hard hand has cut another 5 million euros out of the budget by selling defender Alexis to Champions League rivals Sevilla. Villareal: Joan Capdevila may be looking at the age of 32, with a World Cup trophy in hand, to make that final contract move and play at Juventus where Spaniards, let alone Spanish defenders, have rarely fared well. Jozy Altidore says also that despite everything he prefers to [...]
