Guest writer/James DielhennUruguay may have won the first ever World Cup on their home turf in 1930, but recent years have seen that status as a top team dwindle. After failing to qualify at all in 2006, Uruguay needed to beat Costa Rica in a play-off to book their place in South Africa. Oscar Tabarez, who led Uruguay to the quarter-finals of Italia ’90 as manager, is back for his stint in the job, and his side finished fifth in [...]

Today’s edition of Around La Liga will be a little different. Rather than pick what the sports dailies are saying, I’ll take this tour bus on a trip. We’ll take a look at the headlines in all the regions. Take this with a grain of salt, coming from the source, but Mundo Deportivo has some very credible thoughts about the possible signing of Jose Mourinho for Real Madrid and the very real possibility that the Galactico Project Mark 2 is over. The plan consists of this: A three year contract minimum although the Portuguese tactician would like a fourth for good measure. It’s a basic deal really- one year more than Pellegrini got. The financial terms are probably going [...]

Goalkeeper: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Pepe Reina(Liverpool), Victor Valdes (FC Barcelona). I got it right, imagine that. Defenders: Sergio Ramos, Alvaro Arbeloa, Carles Puyol, Gerard Pique, Raul Albiol, Carlos Marchena, Joan Capdevila: I thought they’d take 7 and they have, plus the right ones. So far so good. Midfielders: Jesus Navas, Xabi Alonso, Xavi, Javi Martinez, Cesc Fabregas, Sergio Busquets, Andres Iniesta. I thought they would take eight midfielders and they took seven, but they counted Silva as a forward [...]

One of the staples of International Cups is the slogans that have been chosen to represent each countries’ history, their individual goals, and their aspirations for World Cup 2010. Some are great, a sublime sentence encapsulating all that they hold dear as a people, but some are just awful dreck. You decide. Here are my picks. Great: Algeria: Star and crescent with one goal: Victory! Not bad. Short and precise. Allusions to their Muslim culture and heritage, but also their [...]

Usually the Barcelona kits that Nike have been working on over the last few years have been truly horrendous, especially with the away kits. I remember that horrid beige kit, the tacky aquamarine or the god-awful radioactive yellow monstrosity, but at least the home kits have been classy, elegant and traditonal even when the Portland, Oregon sportswear giant flirted with half-panels one year or adjusted the width of the stripes, but this year., pretty much everything bites. Home Kit: I [...]

The 2010 Champions League Final, the biggest game in club football, will see two teams competing to achieve their respective trebles. And yet this isn’t even the best part of the story. No, in fact the main headline grabber (when’s he not?) is Jose Mourinho. He is the one who’s competing to win his 2nd Champions League winners [...]
