Real forward Gonzalo Higuain scored 2 goals and assisted on a third Saturday as Real Madrid decimated Tenerife 5-1 in domestic play. Higuain opened scoring with a one-touch shot from Marcelo’s well-placed pass (amazing Marcelo is good for something) in the 29th minute. The Argentine’s second came in the 42nd on an Ezequiel Garay assist. Higuain next assisted Kaka’s lone goal via a through pass in the 48th while Cristiano Ronaldo scored Madrid’s fourth from the penalty spot in the [...]

Here’s another detour through the Spanish Primera Division. Barcelona: After three less than stellar outings, culminating in a poor performance against Stuttgart, coach Pep Guardiola knows, “what needs to be done” to force a reaction from the club and return to their consistent form. The first change sees the return of Dani Alves, the second change has been in addressing the club as a whole, and meeting with select players privately, about their collective and singular effort: interesting note that [...]

It was bound to happen, and it finally did, on the 20th of February 2010. Real Mallorca lost to Sevilla 3-1 at the Nou Estadi, which was previously their fortress of solitude, going unbeaten at home through the length of the season. 10 wins to be exact, but now their is a notch in the loss column, to go with the incredible 7 losses away from home, or compliment the 1 win away from home, however you look at it. [...]

Valencia were one of the last decade’s most successful clubs in Europe, reaching consecutive Champions League finals and winning the 2003/04 UEFA Cup, adding the 2004 UEFA Super Cup for good measure. Now, after a difficult few years, Los Che have everything in place to taste European glory again. The financial strife facing the club has taken a back seat, for the time being at least, and manager Unai Emery has been able to build a strong team without losing [...]

Around the League is our weekly detour through the Spanish Primera Division one newspaper at a time; highlights and lowlights, the big stories and those we may have missed. Here’s this week’s edition. Barcelona: The club are looking very closely at the number of muscular injuries to specifically Xavi, Alves, Abidal, Keita, Touré and Chigrinskiy. The technical staff, doctors, trainers, therapists and obviously the players are very nervous at both the amount and the frequency of the injuries, and even [...]

The Champions League was set this year, Real Madrid were on course for la decima or the tenth title, ten years after their last and even half that without so much as a whiff of the next round, but that was supposed to be in the past before the coming of the Florenteam: Galacticos Part Deux. Maybe we should start calling it Galacticos Part D’Oh! The Madrid press are already backtracking their predictions of a white-spangled Summer, “The League, Europe, [...]

Llorente Weaves His Way Through the Yellow Submarine I was watching the Villarreal versus Athletic Bilbao match on Saturday night nursing a beer and waiting for the hamburgers to de-thaw in the sink. Exciting night I know, but I did not end up eating until closer to 7 because of what transpired at the end of the game, which is hard to sum up in to words. A fair first half saw three goals and some good play from both [...]

Written by: Martin/Ligue1Talk I’m generally not into the warring metaphors that soccer players and other sportsmen tend to use before big games, but they seem to fully appropriate for the day. Lyon is taking on the great Real Madrid at Stade Gerland in the first game of the round of 16 of the Champions League, a challenge very similar in its nature to the ones they faced against Manchester United and FC Barcelona at the same stage of the competition [...]
