Sack Alert: Hugo Sanchez in Almeria

ex-Real Madrid legend Hugo SanchezAfter losing to one of the worst clubs on form in Spain, RCD Espanyol led by another member of the La Liga coaching hot-seat, Almeria sacked ex-Real Madrid legend Hugo Sanchez. They have won three games this year under the coach formerly known as the pentapichichi (Getafe, Malaga and Osasuna), but it was their form in recent weeks (one win, one draw and 6 losses in their last eight games) that sunk his chances of continuing on.

It could have been the fact that while he preached commitment to team, city and badge, there was always that unasked question lingering: “Hey, Hugo. You think you’ll ever coach Real Madrid?” or it could have been that a small club like Almeria, so tied into the mystique of a young coach like Unai Emery, was never going to continue on in the same manner. More than likely it wasn’t the coach at all that’s responsible for their fall. The fact is that they never successfully replaced a force like Alvaro Negredo in attack.

Hugol will bounce back. There’s always MLS…
