Not that Villareal weren’t [...]

Thousands of boina wearing basques traveled to the Mestalla in Valencia today to watch the Copa del Rey Final pitting Barcelona against their beloved zurigorri; the red-and-whites from Bilbao. This was billed as the battle for the King’s Cup between the top two teams of all-time in the domestic cup competition. Ironic that the King would be there, overseeing a cup in his name for Spain, while the combatants were clubs identifying two regions that generally don’t consider themselves Spanish. [...]

In a highly contested match filled with controversial decisions, the initial reactions from fans and media was to concentrate on the obvious themes left from the match played. Was it 5 or 7 penalty shouts, or was the likely answer one obvious one (the Pique handball and even that has to show intent and since he was turning away from it I can see why the ref didn’t call it) and one debatable one (the Abidal foul on Malouda-initial contact [...]

If you want to read my full report about the Champions League match between Chelsea and Barca try this link here but I’ll try to give a little more here for the rest of my readers. When we left Barca last we had Pep Guardiola and Xavi Hernandez complaining about refereeing mistakes that cost them severely in last weeks preliminary match. Hiddink told them to grow some before getting on a plane to London, so the young Catalan coach decided [...]

The first 100 days in charge of Espanyol, yes as.com are comparing him to President Obama, have been frought with as many difficulties as the young American President. The club had fallen from a respectable midtable start under Tintin Marquez to dangerous levels within two disastrous winter months. The club panicked and brought in relegation specialist Jose Maria Esnal (Mane’) who proceed to gain two points from six matches. He was fired after a humiliating 4-0 loss away at Malaga. [...]

The week ended for Real Madrid with another series in a long line of indignities: losing 2-6 to an FC Barcelona squad that had clearly been looking forward to the return leg at the Bernabeu since just after their last visit when the blaugrana hoisted the traditional honor guard for their hated rivals to celebrate winning the league the week before. Add last week’s temporary loss of motor control for one Brazilian player (the Portuguese international defender Pepe) and another [...]
